From Mumbai to Tokyo: Harshada Pathare’s Documentary on the Divine Feminine Shortlisted at International Film Awards
MUMBAI: Mumbai-based author and documentary storyteller Harshada Pathare’s SHODH – The Goddess of Metamorphosis has been shortlisted for screening at the Tokyo Film and Screenplay Awards, taking an intriguing narrative rooted in India’s spiritual heritage to an international platform.
The documentary is the second instalment in Pathare’s SHODH series, which explores lesser-known dimensions of India’s spiritual, cultural and mythological traditions.
Centred on the concept of the divine feminine, the film draws inspiration from a fascinating belief associated with a revered goddess in the Himalayan region. An extraordinary phenomenon connected with her divine presence has intrigued devotees for generations. Without revealing the identity of the goddess or the mystery surrounding the belief, the documentary explores themes of feminine energy, transformation, faith and the deeper questions embedded in India’s spiritual consciousness.
Through SHODH, Pathare seeks to bring lesser-known cultural narratives into contemporary conversations, allowing audiences to engage with stories that often remain outside mainstream discourse.
The Tokyo Film and Screenplay Awards, organised by Best Film Awards, is an IMDb-qualifying online film festival offering screening opportunities to filmmakers worldwide. The organisation states that it has previously honoured directors whose films were shortlisted for Oscar and BAFTA nominations.
Adding a distinctive Japanese connection to the documentary’s journey, the festival has informed Pathare that a Golden Kintsugi Award has been prepared for the film, subject to the judges’ approval.
Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, celebrates transformation by turning imperfections into elements of beauty. Its philosophy of renewal and resilience creates an interesting parallel with the documentary’s central theme, bringing together Indian spiritual thought and Japanese artistic symbolism.
The worldwide festival results are scheduled to be announced on November 10, 2026. Pathare now awaits the jury’s final decision on the proposed recognition.
An author of The Following and Love Talks, Pathare’s creative work spans fiction, poetry and documentary storytelling. She is also the creator of the documentary SHODH, through which she continues to explore identity, cultural narratives and human experiences.
The shortlisting marks another milestone in her creative journey, offering an opportunity for an Indian cultural narrative to reach audiences beyond geographical boundaries.
From Mumbai to Tokyo, SHODH carries forward a story of faith, mystery and metamorphosis.
Results will be announced in November 2026
