Dr. Shamin Eabenson Highlights Growing Awareness of Generic Medicines Among Medical Students Through PMBJP Study

Rising healthcare costs have become one of the biggest challenges for patients across India, especially when it comes to long-term treatment and regular medication expenses. To address this concern, the Government of India introduced the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), a flagship initiative aimed at making quality generic medicines available at affordable prices. A recent cross-sectional study conducted among medical students in North Karnataka has highlighted their awareness, perception, and understanding of generic medicines and the Janaushadhi scheme.

The research study, titled “Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana and the perception of medical students towards generic medicines in North Karnataka: a cross-sectional study,” was published in the International Journal of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology. The study was conducted among 157 MBBS medical students from Vijayapura District, Karnataka, between January and February 2026.

Understanding the Importance of Affordable Generic Medicines

Generic medicines play a crucial role in reducing healthcare expenses while maintaining accessibility to essential treatments. Unlike branded medicines, generic drugs contain the same active ingredients and are required to meet quality standards before reaching patients.

The PMBJP initiative was introduced to improve access to affordable medicines through a network of Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country. These centres provide medicines at significantly lower prices, helping patients reduce their out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.

The study focused on medical students because they represent the future generation of healthcare professionals who will influence prescription practices and patient awareness in the coming years.

Study Reveals Positive Awareness Among Medical Students

The findings showed that a majority of medical students had awareness about generic medicines. Around 77.1% of participants reported being aware of generic medicines, while 65.6% understood the difference between generic and branded medicines.

The research also found that many students recognized the financial benefits of generic medicines. Approximately 81.5% of students believed that generic medicines are less expensive compared to branded medicines, and 84.7% agreed that using generic medicines can help reduce overall medicine costs.

These findings indicate a growing understanding among future doctors regarding the role of affordable medicines in improving healthcare accessibility.

Need to Improve Awareness and Confidence

Despite positive awareness levels, the study also identified certain gaps in knowledge and confidence regarding generic medicines. Many students were unaware of the availability of Jan Aushadhi Kendras in their local areas, highlighting the need for stronger communication and awareness campaigns.

The research showed that 81.5% of participants believed Jan Aushadhi medicine stores should be available in every hospital, reflecting strong support for easier accessibility of affordable medicines.

However, concerns regarding effectiveness, quality comparison, and prescription preferences still exist. Building trust among healthcare professionals and patients remains important for wider acceptance of generic medicines.

Role of Doctors in Promoting Affordable Healthcare

Doctors play a significant role in guiding patients toward safe and affordable treatment options. The study emphasizes the importance of educating medical students and healthcare professionals about government initiatives like PMBJP.

Regular awareness programs, medical education sessions, and public campaigns can help improve understanding of generic medicines. Greater acceptance among doctors can encourage more patients to consider affordable alternatives without compromising treatment quality.

Future of Generic Medicines in India

The Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana represents an important step toward making healthcare more affordable and accessible for millions of Indians. With increasing awareness among medical students and healthcare professionals, the initiative has the potential to create a stronger impact.

The study concludes that continued awareness efforts, improved accessibility, and increased confidence among doctors and patients are essential for the successful implementation of the Janaushadhi scheme. Promoting affordable healthcare solutions can help reduce financial burdens on families and support better health outcomes across the country.
